Early morning Friday 23rd July sees the sculptures after the overnight security men have left. The smaller one at the front here is to be hung from a window near the Grosvenor Centre entrance. According to the ‘Blink’ posters, originally there was to be some kind of link of ribbons between the two, but this was not implemented.

Comments by market visitors:

“It looks like a British Gas symbol thing, like a blue flame”

“What a load of rubbish!” (This remark was repeated a great many times, by many people, so would tend to become repetitive if we recorded it here. The remarks were directed not so much at the sculpture itself, as at the idea of the council spending public money on art exhibits at a time of recession).

“Moving those poor beggars just to show this! What’s the point? There’s plenty room down the bottom for it!”

“It looks sort of willowy, so it should be green, not blue. I like the shape, I think.”

“It’s like a climbing frame for kids, ain’t it?”

“I like it, I think it looks like the frame of a wigwam.”

“I read it was gonna be leather? Is it gonna be coated in leather?.”

“Council paid nine grand for that for two weeks - they must be off their heads.”

From a well-known Councillor: “It must be futuristic, I think, considering the colour. Quite definitely futuristic; perhaps May next year.”

From a well-known trader:”Well, it’s just an abstract, no one knows what it is. She don’t know what it is. I had a look inside it and it’s different in there. I talked to her and she’s nice. But she don’t know what it is. The market looks better like this - the events area in the middle. You can see everybody better.”

This picture was taken on the first day the sculpture was on the Market Square. As days pass the artist has woven more blue ribbons around the base of the work.

The sculpture looking quite lonely in its empty space - many people enquired what else was going to feature alongside it, because the space was so large.
